  37. <meta content="The Wagyu breed of beef cattle is renowned for its ability to deposit
  38. high levels of intramuscular fat resulting in highly marbled beef that
  39. meets consumer demands in some niche export markets. We evaluated
  40. the post-weaning growth performance and carcass characteristics
  41. at slaughter of purebred Wagyu steers raised in the feedlot after an
  42. initial backgrounding on grass and silage. Our main aim was to study
  43. the average daily gains (ADG), body condition scores (BCS) and
  44. liveweight (LWT) changes from weaning to slaughter and to estimate
  45. homozygosity and inbreeding coefficients through band sharing
  46. patterns using random amplied polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers.
  47. LWT, ADG and BCS were monitored monthly from 2005-2006.
  48. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples, amplied using
  49. RAPD primers, fragments resolved by gel electrophoresis and banding
  50. patterns elucidated under UV light. A linear increase in liveweight as
  51. age increased was observed and the typical uctuation due to seasonal
  52. variations observed under grazing conditions was unnoticeable.
  53. Average LWT ranged from an initial 110kg to 660kg, ADG ranged
  54. from 0.7–2.0kg/day and BCS reached the maximum of 5 at the end
  55. of the experiment. Average LWT at slaughter was 574kg with a hot
  56. carcass weight of 329kg and a dressing percentage of 57%. Mean eye
  57. muscle area was 94cm2, eye muscle width 8cm and eye muscle length
  58. 16cm. Marbling score was 3, subcutaneous fat depth of 17cm and
  59. total trimmed fat weight was 34kg. Average saleable meat yield
  60. based on the 4 most valuable hind muscles were: Round (11.7kg),
  61. Topside (19.3kg), Rump (13.6kg) and Silverside (15.8kg). Average
  62. band sharing frequencies ranged from 0.60 to 0.96 with estimated
  63. inbreeding coefcients ranging from 0.5% to 7%, respectively. It was
  64. concluded that the inbreeding level was low, negligible and not in
  65. any way detrimental to meat yield and carcass quality destined for the
  66. Japanese market. Finally, RAPD markers were not versatile enough toclearly differentiate between the fastest and slowest growing animals
  67. within the Wagyu breed.

  239. high levels of intramuscular fat resulting in highly marbled beef that&#13;
  240. meets consumer demands in some niche export markets. We evaluated&#13;
  241. the post-weaning growth performance and carcass characteristics&#13;
  242. at slaughter of purebred Wagyu steers raised in the feedlot after an&#13;
  243. initial backgrounding on grass and silage. Our main aim was to study&#13;
  244. the average daily gains (ADG), body condition scores (BCS) and&#13;
  245. liveweight (LWT) changes from weaning to slaughter and to estimate&#13;
  246. homozygosity and inbreeding coefficients through band sharing&#13;
  247. patterns using random amplied polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers.&#13;
  248. LWT, ADG and BCS were monitored monthly from 2005-2006.&#13;
  249. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples, amplied using&#13;
  250. RAPD primers, fragments resolved by gel electrophoresis and banding&#13;
  251. patterns elucidated under UV light. A linear increase in liveweight as&#13;
  252. age increased was observed and the typical uctuation due to seasonal&#13;
  253. variations observed under grazing conditions was unnoticeable.&#13;
  254. Average LWT ranged from an initial 110kg to 660kg, ADG ranged&#13;
  255. from 0.7–2.0kg/day and BCS reached the maximum of 5 at the end&#13;
  256. of the experiment. Average LWT at slaughter was 574kg with a hot&#13;
  257. carcass weight of 329kg and a dressing percentage of 57%. Mean eye&#13;
  258. muscle area was 94cm2, eye muscle width 8cm and eye muscle length&#13;
  259. 16cm. Marbling score was 3, subcutaneous fat depth of 17cm and&#13;
  260. total trimmed fat weight was 34kg. Average saleable meat yield&#13;
  261. based on the 4 most valuable hind muscles were: Round (11.7kg),&#13;
  262. Topside (19.3kg), Rump (13.6kg) and Silverside (15.8kg). Average&#13;
  263. band sharing frequencies ranged from 0.60 to 0.96 with estimated&#13;
  264. inbreeding coefcients ranging from 0.5% to 7%, respectively. It was&#13;
  265. concluded that the inbreeding level was low, negligible and not in&#13;
  266. any way detrimental to meat yield and carcass quality destined for the&#13;
  267. Japanese market. Finally, RAPD markers were not versatile enough toclearly differentiate between the fastest and slowest growing animals&#13;
  268. within the Wagyu breed.&#13;
